Special Places to stay in India - Alastair Sawdays

Village Ketkiya, Bandhavgarh, Madhya Pradesh, India

Type of Accommodation: Other place

Immersed in nature is this camp - more so than any other in Bandhavgarh. 'Reception' is a treehouse, with an open-air living/dining room/bar and a look-out with live footage of the camp's watering hole. Home, too, comes treetop-perched, in five treehouses scattered across the grounds: Banyan, Mahua, Ebony, Peepal and Flame. Each is authentic, romantic, spectacular and spacious. There are hot water geysers for big open showers, tribal paintings and vibrant throws, airs con and mozzy nets, comfy chunky beds and little writing desks and, best of all, doors that open and fold back to a big balcony with a sensational view. Food back at the main house is delicious, sundowners are a treat, birds chirrup, tigers growl. You are pretty much left to your own devices but open jeeps and experienced guides ferry you into the reserve from 7.30 (6am in summer), armed with camera, picnic lunch, extra jumper... zoom in on the action atop an elephant. Babdgavgarh, compact and teeming with wildlife, has the densest tiger population in India. For jungle bunnies with a sense of adventure, it doesn't get better than this.
